Blessings of the Week, October 10, 2010

1: My Company of New Pastors Group:

The Company of New Pastors is a group I committed to in seminary. It was a six year commitment. We committed to daily Scripture readings. They selected 10 students each from 5 different seminaries. For the first year and a half we met monthly with our seminary classmates. After graduation we meet in groups (mixed up with between the schools with two pastors mentors). Now we just meet once a year, but it's always a gift to get together to say hi and be together.

Our pastor mentors have been a true gift as a part of the journey.

In addition to appreciating the group, I really enjoy the setting where we meeting. Serra Retreat Center is actually a Catholic retreat center in Malibu. You couldn't ask for a better place to meet.

One evening the book we were studying covered baptism, so we went down to the beach for our discussion and worship.

Very thankful for my time in CA and with the group.

2: Fuller Friends:

Since I was so close to Pasadena, I was able to swing by and say hi to a few Fuller friends -always an added treat!

3: Trying New Foods:

I always love trying new (healthy food options). And recently I was a restaurant where there was an option to get cactus leaves for a taco rather than tortillas. Actually really good - added something totally new to a taco.
4: A Successful Canned Food Drive: Each year, FPCA takes part in a canned food drive. This year we collected over 6.5 tons of food! Though the real winner was Arlington Charities, FPCA won the competition (and even got more food than all the other church combined).

5: Chris Tomlin:

Though I just got to see Chris Tomlin at the end of July, I had the chance to see Chris Tomlin again in Tyler, TX (not too far away from the DFW area). So we drive out there for the Thursday evening concert. It was an extra fun concert because Tomlin is from Tyler, and he seemed really pleased to be back. Always a gift to see Tomlin and be led by him in worship.

6: Fun Races: Recently Michelle and I haven't been doing the typical 5Ks, but have signed up for some different kind of races. The first was the Jailbreak, a 3.8 mile adventure race. It was a warm day when we ran it, so we were excited when we heard the words, "water ahead." We thought that meant a water stop. Turns out they meant we had to go through a lake. A little bit past that though there was a real water stop with water to drink.

The next race we did was a 10K, trying to get our mileage up before our half marathon. Had a great time wearing our "Team Compassion" shirts (for Compassion International). Lots of people asked about them, and we got to share the mission of Compassion with several people.

7: The Playoffs:

The Texas Rangers haven't played all that great at home in the playoffs, but it was fun to go to watch them play - they haven't made it to the play-offs in 11 years! It was a standing room only crowd!

This was my favorite big screen image - a bobble head Rangers doll when they hit a home run!
I got all Texanized (is that a word) for the game, and even wore my cowboy boots!
